Banking

Banks in the U.S. can vary in terms of several factors, including the following:

  • Branch locations – some banks have branches in all 50 states, while others may only have branches in one state or region of the country; some will be within walking distance from campus while others will require you travel via car or public transit.
  • Hours – some banks offer weekend hours while others are open only weekdays.
  • ATM locations – an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) can be used to withdraw or deposit cash at any time of day/night; some banks have ATMs at locations separate from the bank itself.
  • Services – most banks will offer checking and savings accounts, but other services can vary; some banks will offer special college student accounts.
  • Fees – some banks will charge monthly fees or have required minimum balances to avoid fees; some will charge ATM fees.
  • SSN requirement – some banks require an SSN to open an account while others do not.

It is important to conduct your own research to determine which U.S. bank will be best for your specific needs. Below is a short (non-comprehensive) list of banks in the Bloomington/Normal area (in alphabetical order).

It’s important to ask the bank before visiting about what documents are required for the service you are requesting. When opening a new bank account, you will likely need to bring the following documents to the bank:

  • Passport
  • I-20/DS-2019
  • I-94 Record
  • ISU Redbird Card (this will provide proof for any potential student/staff discounts)
  • SSN is usually not required (ask the specific bank before visiting)
