J-2 Dependents
The spouse or children (under the age of 21) of a J-1 Scholar may accompany them to the U.S. as J-2 dependents. The scholar must provide documentation they can financially support their dependents for the duration of their program. Each J-2 dependent will be issued a DS-2019 document and must apply for a J-2 visa.
A J-2 dependent’s status and eligibility to stay in the U.S. is based on the primary J-1 visa holder’s status. For example, if the J-1’s DS-2019 is extended, the J-2’s DS-2019 will also be extended. Immigration regulations require that all J-2 dependents maintain health insurance coverage.
As part of the check-in/arrival process, the J-1 must upload copies of each J-2 dependent’s immigration documents (passport, visa, I-94) to the ISSS Scholar Portal along with proof of health insurance coverage for each.
J-2s are permitted to study full-time in the U.S.
J-2 spouses may apply through USCIS for permission to work in the U.S. by submitting a Form I-765. If approved for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD card), they must not use their income to support the J-1. After receiving the EAD card, the J-2 can apply for a Social Security Number and begin employment.
